American Waltham Watch Co. was in operation from 1852-1957 and was an American pocket watch manufacturer. Manufacturing of Waltham watches took place at their facility in Waltham, Massachusetts.
The iconic Waltham Riverside Maximus is as good as it gets. Not only is the Maximus the highest-grade Waltham movement produced in this size, but this example features a dial with applied indices that have been heat blued. This is something we have never seen before, as we typically encounter gilt, silver, or painted indices. The heat-blued indices can appear almost black in some lighting before reflecting an iridescent blue as the light catches them. It was an absolute joy photographing this piece and pulling out all of the incredible blue hues from the numerals. The original Breguet hands were corroded, so they were mirror polished and then heat blued by hand over an alcohol lamp. The restored hands now play beautifully with the original heat-blued indices, creating a visual dynamic unlike anything we have encountered before. Beneath the dial sits Waltham’s Riverside Maximus grade, a 23-jewel in-house movement produced between 1897 and 1919, with only 10,013 examples ever manufactured. This piece was completed in 1919, making it one of the last produced. Every component was carefully refinished in our workshop in Little Rock, Arkansas. Screws and steel hardware were thermally colored by hand over an open flame, producing deep blue accents (read more here), while the jewel settings, gear train, balance, and balance weights were individually hand polished to restore their original golden tone. The combination of the original heat-blued indices, restored Breguet hands, and intricate finishing of the Riverside Maximus movement makes this one of the most visually distinctive Waltham conversions we have completed.
The timepiece is encased in our 316L stainless steel conversion case, designed with adjustable lugs for easy winding and setting, ensuring a comfortable fit across various wrist sizes. The case includes front, back, and crown gaskets, providing water resistance up to 50 meters, though it is recommended to remove the watch before engaging in water activities. The timepiece comes fully serviced and ready for your next adventure.
