American Waltham Watch Co. was in operation from 1852-1957 and was an American pocket watch manufacturer. Manufacturing of Waltham watches took place at their facility in Waltham, Massachusetts.
For the first time ever, we have completed a conversion featuring a split-tip hour hand, originally designed as a traveler’s watch. Because this particular piece is fitted with a railroad dial, this configuration is often referred to as a railroad dual time, allowing the wearer to easily track a second time zone while maintaining the clarity of a traditional railroad dial. This complication represents one of the early foundations of what would eventually become the GMT and other modern dual time zone watches. It is an iconic piece with a tremendous amount of history behind it. This watch was originally crafted in Waltham, Massachusetts, and completed in 1921. It is powered by Waltham’s Grade 225 movement, a 17 jewel in house movement produced between 1903 and 1934. The railroad porcelain enamel dial is absolutely flawless, with large Arabic numerals that make reading the time quick and precise. The split tip hour hand is particularly striking and allows for the simultaneous monitoring of two time zones, making this an early example of a dual time travel watch. The movement has been fully restored and refinished, with blue accents applied to the screws and movement hardware through precise hand applied thermal coloring (read more here). The original split hour hand and minute hand were restored and returned to their original heat blued finish using the same traditional thermal process. The jewel settings, gear train, balance, and balance weights were each individually hand polished to restore their original golden luster. Very few of these split-tip hour hand watches were produced, and even fewer survive today, making this one of the more unusual and historically interesting American pocket watch conversions we have ever completed.
The timepiece is encased in a surgical grade 316L stainless steel conversion case, designed with adjustable lugs for easy winding and setting, ensuring a comfortable fit across various wrist sizes. The case includes front, back, and crown gaskets, providing water resistance up to 50 meters, though it is recommended to remove the watch before engaging in water activities. The timepiece comes fully serviced and ready for your next adventure.
