American Waltham Watch Co. was in operation from 1852-1957 and was an American pocket watch manufacturer. Manufacturing of Waltham watches took place at their facility in Waltham, Massachusetts.
This timepiece features a Bailey Banks & Biddle private label porcelain enamel dial, produced for one of the most historically significant American jewelers of the era. Based in Philadelphia Pennsylvania, Bailey Banks & Biddle designed and manufactured numerous United States military decorations and official insignia, including early service and campaign medals issued by the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy, several of which remain in use today. The firm was also responsible for the design of the Great Seal of the United States, which remains the official version in use today. Private label dials from a jeweler with this level of national and institutional significance were produced in limited numbers and add substantial historical value. Crafted in Waltham Massachusetts and completed in 1907, this timepiece is powered by the Waltham Riverside movement, a 19 jewel in house caliber produced between 1895 and 1922. Every movement component has been meticulously refinished, with deep blue accents on the screws and hardware achieved through traditional open flame thermal coloring (read more here). The watch hands were restored by polishing to a mirror finish to remove corrosion and then thermally colored to impart an iridescent blue hue that contrasts beautifully with the dial. The jewel settings, gear train, balance, and balance weights were each individually hand polished to restore their original golden luster. The porcelain enamel dial is in excellent condition, featuring the Bailey Banks & Biddle signature and uniquely shaped highly legible numerals. The heat blued hands stand out crisply against the white enamel surface, making time checking both effortless and visually striking.
The timepiece is encased in a 316L stainless steel conversion case, designed with adjustable lugs for easy winding and setting, ensuring a comfortable fit across various wrist sizes. The case includes front, back, and crown gaskets, providing water resistance up to 50 meters, though it is recommended to remove the watch before engaging in water activities. The timepiece comes fully serviced and ready for your next adventure. Because of our dedication to preserving American watchmaking history, the original 14 karat gold filled pocket watch case will be included as well.
